The RCJ Advice Bureau offers free training sessions which are available to everyone.
We can arrange training for groups or individual one-to-one sessions.
We currently provide training in:

Financial Skills for Life

Sessions can be booked at the Bureau Reception at our Holborn Office.

Group training is also available for front-line advisers. Contact the Bureau to arrange these sessions in advance.

Financial Skills for Life is the Citizens Advice financial literacy project. It was established in partnership with Prudential plc who have been funding the Citizens Advice Financial Skills for Life project for three years.

This project has been providing support to many Citizens Advice Bureaux, helping them to deliver high quality financial skills programmes. You can read more about these projects here Building confidence through Financial Skills for Life.

For many people, a lack of formal financial skills can sometimes lead them to make ill informed decisions on their money matters.

Research shows that just over a quarter of adults don't think they are good at managing their money. (NOP consumer research 2004)

Effective Banking 1 … Choosing and opening an account

  • The advantages of using a bank account
  • Choosing between sorts of bank accounts
  • Types of identification you will need to open a bank account

Effective Banking 2 … Using an account

  • Payment cards
  • Understanding bank statements
  • How to complain to a bank

Dealing with your bills

  • Common reasons for unpaid bills and debt
  • The difference between priority and non-priority bills
  • Top tips on how to deal with debt

Choosing credit

This session covers

  • The differences between various types of credit
  • Understanding what APR is and how it affects paying back bank credit
  • Looking at choosing credit in an everyday situation

Child Trust Funds

A session about the benefits of long-term saving and provides a basic understanding or the “Child Trust Fund”. Topics include:

  • Looking at the different types of Child Trust Fund accounts
  • Saving for the short, medium and long-term
  • Understanding interest rates
  • The difference between saving and investing

Helping you to get debt advice when you need it

Aimed at providing you with information to help you

  • Recognise different types of debt
  • Identify priority debts and non-priority debts
  • Understand what actions a non-priority creditor can take
